Hypertension Print E-mail

The global prevalence of hypertension was recently estimated using the following definition:

  1. an average systolic BP of 140 mm Hg or greater,
  2. a diastolic BP of 90 mm Hg or greater,

By these criteria more than 25% of the world’s adult population was hypertensive and the estimated total number of people with hypertension in 2000 was 972 million.

This is projected to increase by 60% to a total of 1.56 billion by 2025, that is, 29% of the worldwide adult population.
